Sourced in Argentina, Running in Freising: APPL's Third Corona C15

18/12/2018

When the APPL needed a high-performance perfect binder at its Freising site with less than a year to spare, allaoui launched a worldwide search — and found the answer 12,000 kilometers away. A Müller Martini Corona C15, tracked down in Argentina, inspected, dismantled, shipped across the Atlantic, fully overhauled in Aachen, and commissioned in Freising by November. On time, as agreed.

Founded in 1899 in the Bavarian town of Wemding, APPL group is one of Europe's leading printing and finishing operations — a fourth-generation family business producing books, magazines, catalogues, and inserts for publishers and industrial clients across multiple German sites. Freising is the group's dedicated postpress hub, running an extensive fleet of finishing equipment around the clock.

A deadline, a gap, and a worldwide search

In spring of the year, APPL's management identified a clear need: a high-capacity perfect binder had to be operational at the Freising site before year-end. The machine had to be a Müller Martini Corona C15 — a high-speed system capable of 15,000 cycles per hour, and a model Freising already knew well from two existing units on the floor. Adding a third would bring consistency to the line, simplify maintenance, and give operators a machine they already understood. Finding one in the right condition, at the right time, was another matter.

Buenos Aires to Aachen to Freising

The search led to Argentina. allaoui located a suitable Corona C15, sent its specialists to inspect and dismantle the machine on-site, and coordinated its transport across the Atlantic — 60 tons of precision engineering packed into ten containers. Back in Aachen, the machine underwent a thorough cleaning and full overhaul in allaoui's workshop before being cleared for installation. By November, the Corona C15 was running in Freising — on time, within the window APPL had set at the start of the project.

“In the course of our modernization efforts, we have worked closely with allaoui. They met our expectations in terms of closing down projects both swiftly and thoroughly.”

The third in the fleet

With this installation, the Freising site now operates three Müller Martini Corona C15 perfect binders in parallel, producing hundreds of thousands of high-quality books and brochures daily. The standardized fleet pays dividends beyond raw throughput: shared spare parts, consistent operator workflows, and predictable maintenance cycles all strengthen production resilience.

The project also confirmed what Appl values in a machinery partner.

“Our team continues to keep our first visit to allaoui's impressive facilities in Aachen in good memory. We are happy to have won an excellent and reliable partner in the printing machinery business.”

Building on momentum

For APPL, this Corona C15 was part of a broader, ongoing modernization strategy — not a one-off purchase. For allaoui, it demonstrated the full scope of what the company delivers: global sourcing, technical overhaul, and end-to-end project management from disassembly on one continent to commissioned production on another.
