From El Salvador to Yerevan: 14,000 Kilometres for the Perfect Stitch

03/02/2019

Tigran Mets, one of Armenia's largest commercial printers, has expanded its bindery capabilities with a Müller Martini Ventura MC thread-sewing machine sourced, refurbished, and installed by allaoui. The machine — originally located in El Salvador — travelled 14,000 kilometres to its new home in Yerevan, completing the journey in just five months from initial sourcing to full production readiness.

Tigran Mets has established itself as a heavyweight in the Armenian print market. The company handles large-format commercial print work and has built a particular reputation for high-quality hardcover book production, handling demanding jobs with thick, complex book blocks that require precision binding across the full production run.

A machine with two requirements

When Tigran Mets began looking for a new thread-sewing solution, the brief was specific: the machine had to support the sewing of extra-thick book blocks — a requirement many standard binders simply cannot meet — and it had to feature a modern, best-in-class quality control system. Half-measures were not an option. Production volumes and the quality expectations of their customers left no room for compromise.

The combination of these two requirements pointed clearly to one machine. The Müller Martini Ventura MC, equipped with the ASIR III optical quality control system, is among the most respected thread-sewers in the industry precisely because it handles demanding book blocks while maintaining consistent stitch quality throughout the run. The question was not which machine — it was where to find one.

A global search, a South American find

Eventually, allaoui located a suitable Ventura MC in El Salvador. Before any commitment was made, the machine underwent a detailed technical inspection on-site to assess its condition. The findings guided a comprehensive spare parts order placed in Germany, with original Müller Martini components shipped directly to Armenia — arriving ahead of the machine itself.

Meanwhile, the Ventura MC began its 14,000-kilometre journey across the Atlantic. Upon arrival in Yerevan, allaoui's engineer completed the refurbishment on-site, replacing all worn components with original parts. Installation followed, and the handover included thorough operator instruction to ensure the Tigran Mets team could take full advantage of every performance feature the Ventura MC offers.

The entire process — from sourcing in South America to fully operational machine in Armenia — was completed in five months.

A wide block and a satisfied customer

The results speak clearly. The Ventura MC with ASIR III is now running in full production at Tigran Mets, handling the extra-wide book blocks the company is known for. Mr. Hovhannisyan and his team now have a binding solution that matches both the scale and the quality standard their customers expect.

For allaoui, the project reinforced something the company has built its reputation on: when a customer has a precise need and the right machine exists somewhere in the world, geography is not an obstacle. The deal brought together a South American machine, German spare parts expertise, and Armenian print production into a single seamless project.

Looking ahead

With the Ventura MC integrated into their workflow, Tigran Mets is well positioned to take on larger and more demanding book production contracts. The investment in quality control through ASIR III also opens the door to customers with stricter acceptance criteria — a growing segment in commercial hardcover publishing.
